DIY Cloth Face Mask: 9 Steps

A do-it-yourself or DIY cloth face mask is the only option for the protection you have during the pandemic where the surgical and industrial masks are scarce. Yes, you can choose to buy a cloth mask in a store, but during the COVID-19 epidemic, you know that you need to change it frequently.

Therefore, one of the essential skills to learn to fill your time during the quarantine period is to learn how to make a cloth face mask. The good news is that it is easy to learn and you can create one even if you do not have to buy a new fabric from a store.

What Is the Best Fabric to Make Face Masks

As mentioned, you do not have to go out and rummage for a fabric store to create your cloth face mask. If you know what kind of fabric is the best to use for face masks, you can procure from the available unused cloth you have. The most advisable type of material for the face mask is 100 percent cotton.

Here are the examples of fabric sources that you can use:

  • Dishtowels
  • Pillowcases
  • Cotton clothing such as T-shirts

If you procure some, wash them clean and dry.

How Do You Make a Fabric Face Mask

There are different ways to make a cloth face mask. You can create one even if you do not know how to turn on a sewing machine. However, in this article, you will know how to make a face mask, assuming you know how to sew.

  1. Prepare the materials.

Other than the fabric, you also need a ruler, scissors, iron, thread, sewing machine, and sewing pins.

  1. Cut the fabric in its ideal sizes.

You will need four pieces of fabric. Cut the first two fabric in 7 by 9 inches and the other two in 1.5 by 40 inches. For the last pair, you may choose to replace them with ribbon or laces.

  1. Sew the 7 by 9 inches of fabric together.

When you sew this pair of fabric, make sure to put the right sides facing together. Sew around the rectangle, only leaving a few inches on the long side of it.

  1. Turn the fabric you sewn inside out.

Remember that gap that you left unsewn? Use that to pull the fabric to turn it inside out to place the right side outside.

  1. Create pleats.

Along the 7-inch part of the cloth, create the pleats evenly.  You can secure the pleats with pins to ensure that the pleats face the same way.

  1. Sew around the rectangle.

You need to sew around the rectangle to secure the pleats and to close the unsewn gap you left in the previous step.

  1. Prepare the other fabric that you will use as a strap.

If you are using fabric strips as straps, iron them first in a lengthwise position to make them thinner. Make sure that the strips’ size match to each side of the mask.

  1. Pin the straps in place.

Secure each end at the top and the other end at the bottom.

  1. Sew the straps to the mask.

Sew the straps way down below on each side.
